Itasca State Park located in Park Rapids, established in 1891, is Minnesota’s oldest state park. It attracts more than 500,000 visits annually. Today, the park totals more than 32,000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. As the city celebrates 125 years of Minnesota State Parks and Trails, it has also begun surveying infrastructure upgrades and restoration projects for the sewer systems in disrepair with the Park. To bring the nearly 50 year old sewer up to acceptable standards, at the historic Douglas Lodge, the approximate cost will be $3 million. Itasca State Park, which encompasses Lake Itasca and the Mississippi River headwaters, includes 157 lakes covering over 3,000 acres.
Several other smaller towns are in supplication for funding to upgrade their sewer systems. Winnebago is one of numerous small cities in rural Minnesota that struggle to allocate money to replace aging sewer infrastructures. The city is seeking $3.7 million from the state for a $6.6 million project that would separate its sanitary sewer and storm water systems. If afforded, Winnebago will build an above-ground lift station in coming months. The city has implemented a new water fee at a rate of $25 a month; in order to supply a portion of the funds needed for enhancements.
