Sewer Pipe Rehabilitation Advisory for Minneapolis Suburb

sewer

The City of Austin is in the process of rehabilitating their streets and sewers. The $1.8 million project is about three miles long, from Interstate 90 to south of 11th Avenue Southwest. Work being done will include removing a layer of roadway and replacing it with a fresh layer of blacktop, while also improving 72 pedestrian ramps and replacing several storm sewer pipe along the route. The main detour affecting residents will start on May 16 and will be at the intersection of Oakland Avenue West and 12th Street Southwest right by Kwik Trip for underground storm sewer work. The detour will last two weeks.

Interesting fact: The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has proposed a ban on labeling wipes as being flushable or safe for septic or sewer systems. Instead, those products would be required to carry a label saying “Do not flush.”  These wipes are known to cause clogs in homeowner and municipal sewer pipes, put stress on community wastewater collection and treatment equipment, and cause cities to spend thousands on premature equipment repair and replacement. Wipes snag on any imperfection in sewer pipes, catch passing debris and grease, and create a ‘ball’ that will cause blockage in the pipeline. Also something to keep in mind for old houses in Minneapolis and Saint Paul:  if your home has a lead or galvanized water supply pipe, the water pressure is typically fine, but there can be a big reduction in water flow. When water comes out of a pipe with normal flow for a split second but then the flow drops down, it typically indicates a problem with the water supply pipe for the home.
